Management of Obstetric Emergencies & Trauma   M.O.E.T  

The MOET Course is overseen by the Advanced Life Support Group, A.L.S.G., in Manchester - a charity dedicated to preserving life by providing training and education to the general public and in particular, but not exclusively to doctors, nurses and other members of the medical profession, in life saving techniques.         Click here for a link to the A.L.S.G. website.

    Who Can Apply?

All candidates should be from a medical background.  In obstetrics/gynaecology Professors, Consultants, Associate Specialists, Staff Grades and Trust Doctors are automatically eligible.  In a training grade candidates should have part 2 MRCOG.  Anaesthetic candidates should have FRCA and A & E candidates should be staff grade with a special interest in obstetric emergencies and trauma. 

        Midwives can apply to attend a MOET course as an observer.

    Course Aims/Brief Outline

The course is in advanced life support style and aims to provide doctors with a systematic approach to deal with life-threatening maternal obstetric emergencies. Some of the topics covered include CPR Resuscitation, Airway Management & Ventilation, Neonatal Resuscitation, Thoracic Trauma, Shock, Abdominal Trauma, Extremity Trauma, Spine Trauma, Domestic Violence, Complications of Delivery, Management of Obstetric Haemorrhage, Anaesthetic Complications in Obstetrics.


There is a pre course element which is completed on-line, followed by a 2 day face to face (F2F) element held in the Clinical Skills Centre.  Once your place is confirmed you will be sent details of how to log on to the Virtual Learning Enviornment (VLE) on the ALSG website.  It is essential you complete this on-line section, which includes the pre-course MCQ, and send your completion certificate (Part A) to Linda at the Clinical Skills Centre, prior to attending the 2 days F2F component.  Any F2F candidates who have not completed the VLE component will not be allowed to obtain a F2F completion certificate (Part B) even if they subsequently complete the VLE component at a later date; they will only ever be eligible to receive an observer certificate, there will be no exceptions to this ruling.

    Selection of Potential Instructors (IP)

During the provider course the faculty will also be looking for candidates who show instructor potential.  The criteria used for this assessment are as follows:

  • 1.  Credibility

  • 2.  Communication Skills

  • 3.  Enthusiasm for Course

  • 4.  Ability to Critique

  • 5.  Interactive/Supportive with other members

  • 6.  Team Member

The recommendation is the decision of the entire faculty and is made at the final faculty meeting.  Candidates who are recommended will be contacted following the course.


Candidates who are successful in all areas of the course can print a provider certificate, after completing the on-line evaluation form on the ALSG vle.  The certificate is valid for 4 years.  After this time they should recertify by undertaking both Parts A & B in full.  Candidates will be notified that the certificate is available to print after returns have been received and ALSG validation checks have been carried out. 


Accommodation may be available in the hospital accommodation blocks at a cost of £35.00 per night, which includes breakfast in the hospital restaurant.  You would be allocated a double en-suite room - one of four in each flat, which also has a fully fitted kitchen with seating area. Linen and tea/coffee making facilities are supplied.     Course dinner

The course dinner is for both candidates and faculty and is held on the first evening of the course at a local restaurant.  The cost of the dinner is included in the course fee.  Please indicate on your booking form whether you would like to attend. 

        MOET is recognised for external CPD points.           

        Cancellation Policy

The course fee will not be refunded for cancellations made within 4 weeks of the commencement of the course, unless a replacement candidate can be found.  No refunds will be made without the return of the pre-course material.  All cancellations will incur an administration fee of £20.00.
